James Franco Talks Selfies, Why They Get So Much Attention

James Franco

James Franco isn’t your ordinary actor, and has embraced social networks like Instagram to reach out to his millions of fans.

According to Franco, the TODAY show on NBC called him “the selfie king.”

Yesterday, the 127 Hours actor wrote an article for The New York Times talking about selfies.

Franco is not oblivious to why his selfies receive the most likes, also mentioning his “two handsome brothers” who also do well on Instagram.

Here’s what he says doesn’t get as much, uhh, positive attention:

Those with photos of art projects; videos telling the haters to go away (in not so many words); and photos with poems. (Warning: Post your own, and you’ll see how fast people become poetry specialists and offer critiques like “I hate you, you should die.”)

Franco points to other celebrities like Justin Bieber and Taylor Swift who’s selfies also receive a lot of attention, and for celebrities, a selfie is a shot that paparazzi wish for.

He compares Instagram to the movie business, saying “You’re safe if you trade “one for them” with “one for yourself,” meaning for every photo of a book, painting or poem, I try to post a selfie with a puppy, a topless selfie or a selfie with Seth Rogen, because these are all things that are generally liked.”

James Franco says he’s actually turned off when he comes across an Instagram account with no selfies because he’s not sure who he’s dealing with, and in today’s age of social media, a selfie is the new way to say hello.
