Are you thinking about traveling to Ithaca, New York? Well, according to the city’s tourism board, you might want to reconsider.
The official Visit Ithaca website put up an interesting message over the weekend. Instead of asking potential tourists to come and visit the wintry wonderland, they offered up another suggestion for a winter vacation: The Florida Keys.
Due to this ridiculously stupid winter, Ithaca invites you to visit The Keys this week. Please come back when things thaw out. PS. Send Us A Postcard.
No, the Visit Ithaca website was hacked. And no, the Key West tourism board to not pay for this advertisement.
Bruce Stoff, director of the Ithaca/Tompkins County Convention & Visitors Bureau, told the Miami Herald:
“Everyone up here, we’re just done with winter. Honestly, this is a way to stay engaged with our customers in a way that’s kind of fun and a little unexpected,” he said. “God forbid there’s ever honesty in advertising.”
It really is a great idea. We’re guessing that the weather will cause Ithaca to lose more visitors this week than this “Visit Florida” sign, and now that the marketing campaign has gone viral, a lot more people will probably end up visiting Ithaca in the future.
And hey, Florida may even reciprocate the favor in the future. The Visit Florida website certainly appreciated the free advertisement.
Well, there goes my job. MT @CNNBrian: Due to cold weather, @VisitIthaca is encouraging people to visit Keys instead. pic.twitter.com/xTviCzf08W
