An I-40 bus crash in Tennessee is responsible for claiming the lives of at least eight people. The vehicle that caused the accident has been identified as a North Carolina church bus.

The I-40 crash was caused when the bus smashed into an SUV and a tractor-trailer after it blew a tire and sped across the Interstate 40 median.

The accident occurred in eastern Tennessee and claimed the lives of six bus passengers, the big-rig driver, and one of the three passengers driving in the Chevrolet Tahoe. 18 passengers were reported to be riding inside the church bus at the time of the crash.

According to a police report the accident occurred around 2PM near the Interstate 81 split in Jefferson County, approximately 30 miles east of Knoxville, Tennessee.

The I-40 bus crashed forced emergency crews to close Interstate 40 in both directions at mile marker 423.

Several witnesses and news agencies captured the devastation crash in photographs and posted them to Twitter.

Further details from the bus crash have not been released by officials at this time.
