Social media holds a treasure trove of data not just based on what’s happening around the world, but nearly every detail about our own personal lives.
In fact, a study published in October 2013 found that Facebook can help predict when couples are about to get divorced.
Today, major social networks have advanced learning mechanisms that know what you’re interested in without you even thinking about it.
This all adds up to more relevant ads, which in turn increases clicks and revenues, continuing their cycle of existence.
Janrain, an industry leader in the social login and sharing space, offers a free tool to determine what data popular social media sites have on you.
Simply called the “Social Profile Navigator,” it currently includes access to the following social networks:
- Google+
- VK
- Tumblr
- Flickr
- Foursquare
- SoundCloud
It also works with other sites such as Yahoo, Amazon, PayPal and Microsoft.
To get started, simply go to the Social Profile Navigator website here, and click on any of the icons at the very top:
Once you click on an icon, you’ll see a “Connect with” button on the far right:
Click it, and follow the prompts via the pop-up window to grant the tool access. For example, Facebook will look something like this:
Each circle can be expanded to see specific details, and the data you see is just the tip of the iceberg.
There is often far more information that social media sites collect for advertising purposes, and information that often eerily predicts future plans.
