The phrase “hands up, don’t shoot” has become the rallying cry of protesters in Ferguson in the wake of Mike Brown’s death earlier this month and now several people on Twitter have started using the hashtag #HandsUpFriday to show solidarity with small Missouri town.

It’s still unclear what happened on the night that Mike Brown was shot dead by officer Darren Wilson but many protesters believe that the shooting was unprovoked. One witness claims that Brown had his hands in the air and was telling the officer that he was unarmed shortly before he was shot.

There have been conflicting reports about what happened before Mike Brown’s death in Ferguson, Missouri. A police source said earlier this week that officer Darren Willson was “severely beaten” before he pulled his gun in self-defense. Wilson hasn’t been charged with a crime yet but there is an ongoing local, state, and federal investigation into the case.
Attorney General Eric Holder said: “Our investigation into this matter will be full, it will be fair, and it will be independent. And beyond the investigation itself, we will work with the police, civil rights leaders, and members of the public to ensure that this tragedy can give rise to new understanding — and robust action — aimed at bridging persistent gaps between law enforcement officials and the communities we serve.”
