Hallmark Swastikas? Gift Wrap Pulled From Stores After Nazi Symbol Complaints

Hallmark Cards Inc. has pulled some holiday gift wrap from stores in the United States after receiving complaints that the product contained swastikas in the design.

Hallmark said in a statement: “As soon as we were made aware of the situation, we began taking steps to remove the gift wrap from all store shelves and we will ensure the pattern is not used on any product formats going forward. We sincerely apologize for this oversight and for any unintended offense.”

It’s unclear how many rolls of the swastika gift wrap were sold and how many rolls were recalled. Linda Odell, a spokeswoman for the company, said: “The priority is communicating with retailers about removing the current version from shelves.”

Hallmark said that the design was in its archives for years and it simply didn’t notice it when they created this year’s holiday paper. It probably was just an honest mistake but some people believe that Hallmark should have, you know, double checked for swastikas when picking out holiday wrapping paper.

Others are just tickled since the company says its objective is to make the “world a more caring place.”
