Foursquare is rolling out an update to its Android app, allowing users to automatically receive personalized recommendations based on their current location.
The new feature works without the need to check-in, and sips valuable battery life at just 0.7 percent per hour.
For example, if you are a fan of sushi, having checked in at restaurants many times, you might be alerted there is a highly rated sushi joint right around the corner.
Of course, if you do not care for push recommendations, you will be able to easily turn them off.
In October 2011, Foursquare introduced its Radar feature on iOS devices, offering similar push recommendations.
Unfortunately, Radar took a serious hit on battery life at the time, and according to CEO Dennis Crowley, “geo-fencing technology wasn’t sophisticated enough, and on our end we didn’t always have enough data.”
With improved hardware and better battery life on today’s smartphones, the location-based check-in service has spent around 10 months working on a much improved version.
Android users need be patient as only around 2000 users have received push recommendations thus far, and there is no mention of how long it will take to roll out to all Android users.
However, Crowley hopes to have this new feature rolled out to all Foursquare users across all platforms by the end of 2013.
