A video titled “I forgot my phone” is making the internet rounds, and has received more than 18 million views in an awkward indictment of what social media and constant connectivity have done to us in the abstract.
The “I forgot my phone” video spreading on social media is definitely a bit guilt-inducing, in as much as we all have invited Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and the rest of the common sharing services into every moment of our lives … every moment, for better or for worse.
While “I forgot my phone” is benign and somewhat mundane in its premise, it also illustrates how wholly we sometimes step out of what’s happening to create a record or share of it for later. And we’ve all seen it play out on sites like Facebook, with big life events making an appearance on the social network in such a way it’s clear that their preservation supplanted the moment itself.
The whole social media thing has certainly enhanced our lives more than detracted from them in lots of ways, but the double edge of the sword of course is that with this capability, it’s hard to let a moment pass without wanting to share.
It’s not cool to be sanctimonious about it, in as much as we have social sharing capability and no one can be expected to be the luddite when it comes to their own engagement, cake, or bowling party.
