Do you ever wonder how many times Twitter users use the F-bomb in a day? Well, Fbomb.co may not have an exact number, but it does provide an interactive map that displays tweets using the naughty word in real time. Not interested in clicking all of the bomb signs to see what people are tweeting? No problem, the site’s Twitter handle retweets them for you at random.
Fbomb.co was created by Carleton University junior Martin Gingras, a software developer whose inspiration came from a conversation with two colleagues. He explained on his personal website:
“We were talking about how people misuse and abuse the English language. As the conversation devolved, swearing was brought up. In particular we talked about how swearing can completely undermine ones argument … From there our conversation wound its way to how it’d be neat to map where people swear.”
And thus, Fbomb.co was born. From looking at the website for a few minutes, it’s easy to see that English speaking countries are the worst offenders. At the time I looked, the United States was the worst of all (surprise, surprise, huh?). However, I was impressed to see some tweets in Saudi Arabia, South Africa, and Argentina.
While Gingras acknowledges the website has humor attached to it, he added that it has a more helpful purpose, the software developer explained, “I also hope that people take a moment to read a few of them and realize how ridiculous they can sound and think twice before just saying the first thing to come to their mind using social media.”
While we agree Fbomb.co is rather amusing, it is definitely important to think twice before posting the F-word on social media.
