Two Brooklyn-based designers have launched Instasham — a completely free, online repository of fake Instagram photos that visitors can steal and claim for themselves.
Let’s face it, a big part of social media from a single-user perspective is vanity and Andy Dao, Stacey Smith, and Joseph Valle, the creators of the site, are betting that our need for attention will drive the site’s success.
“Digital photography and social media have amplified our ability to share our lives with the rest of the world. We are a society that brags through megapixels. It is in this insight that we saw an opportunity and Instasham was created,” stated on the webpage.
The site wasn’t just created for fame though, the artists designed it as a social experiment and media arts project too.
So if you’re looking to play a joke on your followers, or actually deceive for personal gratification, Instasham may be for you. The site boasts a decent collection of fake Instagram HD images from around the web and categorizes them into lifestyle sections like “Globe Trotter” and “On A Living Spree.”
The site’s tag line? “If you can’t make it, fake it.” I know there’s a joke there somewhere, but I just can’t quite find it.
So would you use these fake Instagram images to trick friends? Let us know in the comments below. I’m currently on this zipline in the Mexican Caribbean, so if I don’t respond to comments right away you’ll know why.
