Facebook Will Delete Posts, Instagram Photos Selling Guns

Facebook has been dealing with backlash from gun control groups, and today the social network announced it will soon start deleting posts selling guns.

The initiative will also apply to Instagram, and will cover guns being sold through private means without a background check.

From a company spokesperson:

“We will remove reported posts that explicitly indicate a specific attempt to evade or help others evade the law. For example, we will remove reported posts where the potential buyer or seller indicates they will not conduct a background check or are willing to sell across state lines without a licensed firearms dealer.”

Facebook says it will start implementing the new policy over the next few weeks.

Here’s what New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman had to say:

“I congratulate Facebook and Instagram for taking these simple, common sense steps to protect the safety and security of their users, and encourage other social media sites to follow their lead.”

While private gun sales are legal, all depending on various factors and state laws, Facebook wants to distance itself from such controversial topics.

The move is sure to not sit well with gun advocates, and Facebook says it will also make users more aware of laws if caught trying to sell other products such as tobacco or alcohol.
