There’s a rumor going around that Facebook will start charging a monthly fee. But don’t worry, it’s completely untrue.
The Facebook monthly fee hoax has been going on for years. According to Snopes.com, the first instance of the hoax came at the end of 2009. It keeps popping up every now and then and it still fools a few users.
The hoax usually starts with a fake Facebook page but the latest iteration seemingly comes from a fake news site. The National Report “reports” that Mark Zuckerberg held a press conference over the weekend and told reporters that he was going to start charging for Facebook.
The fake news story quotes Zuckerberg, saying: “After thinking long and hard about this decision, at the end of the day, we were forced to add this monthly fee. If we don’t do something about our rising costs now, Facebook could cease to exist in the near future.”
The fake website even posted a video about the fee hike.
The fake news story encourages people to protest the monthly on Facebook with the hashtag #FacebookMonthlyFee. If you see anyone using that hashtag today, please, tell them that Facebook is not planning on adding a monthly fee.
