Facebook was served with 28,147 government data requests against 38,256 accounts in the second half of 2013.
Facebook didn’t release its first public data request report until August 2013. During the first half of the year the massive social network received 25,607 requests affecting 37,954 user accounts.
Combined the social network accounted for 53,754 government requests against 66,101 accounts.
Along with account requests, the social network also revealed first half 2013 numbers about government requests to restrict or remove content.
In a public statement Facebook writes:
Facebook’s mission is to give people the power to share, and to make the world more open and connected. Sometimes, the laws of a country interfere with that mission, by limiting what can be shared there.
It should be noted that not all of Facebook’s government requests are honored. A team of dedicated workers examine each request and only fulfill those with legal backing.
After being accused of working with the NSA PRISM program in late 2013, the social network has worked tirelessly to protect its image in the eyes of users.
