Today Facebook, Google, LinkedIn, and Twitter announced a collaborative project called WebScaleSQL. The initiative is uniting some of the brightest engineers from the tech companies to work on solving the challenges of working with huge databases.
WebScale SQL is a custom version of MySQL that’s designed for Web companies of large scale.
The companies will share a common set of changes to WebScale SQL which is open source. The project will utilize contributions from MySQL engineering at all of the companies and others will be able to join in on the efforts to help refine it and provide feedback since it will be open.
Facebook announced that they have already setup a system for collaborating, reviewing code, and reporting bugs which has already produced exciting results.
Working together, the engineers involved in WebScale SQL have made major changes including creating making an automated framework that will run and publish the results of MySQL’s built-in test system.
They have also implemented a new suite of stress tests and prototype automated performance testing system, and much more.
In the future Facebook will keep its WebScaleSQL work open, and hopes to create a useful branch for others within the MySQL community who are focused on scale deployments.
