Facebook Emoticons And Activity Sharing Launch For Status Updates

Facebook Activity Update - Ice Cream - Part 2

Facebook has activated emoticons for users across its massive network. The new feature allows Facebook users to choose a standard emoticon (smily face, sad face) or choose an activity they are currently participating in.

Clicking on the smiley face brings up a selection took which includes options for how a user is feeling, what they are watching on TV, what they are reading, what music they are listening to, what they are drinking and what they are eating.

Facebook Emoticons - Types

Once an emotion is selected it is added to the end of the users message:

Users who want to add music, what they are eating and other options are presented with a search feature. As you can see below I could search for an article and click on that artist to select them. If you pay attention to the artists/bands name it also shows the number of “Likes” for that artist. Likes are displayed because when selected the band/artists fan page is linked to the users message. This feature should allow Facebook to increase time on site by pushing users towards fan page they haven’t visited or haven’t visited in a while.

The eating and drinking feature works the same way as artist pages but links to interests. Here is a test message I placed on my personal account for “Ice Cream”:

Any Facebook users who now click on my eating Ice Cream message are taken to the interest page for Facebook. Again this is another way for Facebook to increase on-site times while directing users to page they will likely enjoy because their friends and family enjoy them.

Aside from simply pushing users towards pages friends like, Facebook could use the new system for advertising purposes in the future by recommending certain activities to users.

Facebook has continually attempted to redefine how users share their lives and this new feature appears to be a move in the right direction.

What do you think of the new Facebook emoticon and activity sharing platform for status updates?

  1. Great. Just what we need: something else on Facebook to take up more of our time. Now, if you will excuse me, I need to go update my status.

  2. I think it's neat..but I'm trying to stay off facebook, and not share as much..not stay on it all day and update everything I do. XD

  3. I'd love to give it a try but I guess Facebook doesn't think I need to..

    "Ashley Jorden is feeling butthurt."

  4. This is a Great step taken by Facebook. Now Emoticons can be used not only in Chats but also in posts on Facebook Profiles and their Fan Pages. Such innovations will engage the users for even more time on Facebook (y).
