Excessive Use Of Facebook Can Lead To Infidelity, Not So Shocking Study Says

It’s not a newsflash, but an excessive use of social networking sites like Facebook can lead to infidelity.

It’s not a newsflash, but an excessive use of social networking sites like Facebook can lead to infidelity.

According to a journal of Cyberpsychology, Behavior, and Social Networking published study, Facebook’s networking convenience allows users to easily reconnect with former high school sweethearts, old crushes, or would-be love interests. The research says, if individuals are spending too much time strolling down a digital Memory Lane with exes and crushes, an emotional or physical affair could be in the works.

In the study, researchers found a significant correlation between high levels of Facebook use and the likelihood of arguments in newer relationships (three years old or younger). Unsurprisingly, such quarrels significantly increased the likelihood of infidelity, breakup and divorce.

The link between social media and cheating is nothing new. Ian Kerner, a counselor and New York Times best-selling author who blogs about sex and relationships says in a CNN report, Facebook is creating scores of real-life dramas, destroying relationships by what he calls “Facebook bombs” – blasts from the past who can destroy current relationships in their wake.

According to Kerner and other relationship-wise experts, there are a few ways to Facebook-proof your relationship, and hopefully prevent discord and infidelity.

Don’t romanticize the past at the expense of the present – i.e. forgetting why exes are exes. Sure your former high school sweetheart is still cute and newly single. He has sought you out on Facebook and starts reminding you of the good old days. But do you not recall why you stopped dating him in the first place?

Don’t keep secrets as confiding in your Facebook friends more than you do your partner can establish the foundation for emotional cheating. And when asked, be honest with your partner about who your Facebook friends really are.
