Could Eric Sogard be the next Tim Tebow? He’s not a national phenomenon yet, but his huge social media following is trying to get him there.
For a little background, Sogard is the backup second baseman for the Oakland Athletics. Last year he platooned the position with a variety of players.
A’s fans didn’t care how often he played though. They fell in love with his lanky stature and hipster nerd glasses. They loved him so much he was almost voted as the “Face of MLB” on Twitter.
David Wright, the New York Mets super star third baseman won, beating Sogard by a hair. A career .241 hitter, he also beat Giants’ catcher Buster Posey to advance to the finals.
On Thursday Eric Sogard was hit by Buster Posey trying to throw him out at first. The play got A’s fans fired up, and suddenly he was trending on Twitter.

Some fans had other thoughts about Sogard.
One fan just didn’t get it.
I get the Giants and our players trending, but what got Sogard trending? #SFGiants

Sogard was originally drafted in 2007 in the second round of the amateur draft by the San Diego Padres. He was traded to the A’s in 2010.
Eric Sogard might not be the splashiest player, but he has found a home in Oakland. A’s fans genuinely love their nerdy second baseman, and looking at him it’s hard to deny his appeal.
