Eric Cantor is quitting congress. The Virginia Republican announced late last night that he would officially resign from his position on August 18. Cantor requested that a special election be held to replace him.
Cantor lost a surprising race against Tea Party candidate Dave Brat back in June. The House Majority Leader’s term would have come to an end in January but Cantor announced today that he will be leaving congress early.
The move didn’t win him any fans on Twitter.
Eric Cantor is kinda sad though. Like yeah you (hilariously) lost. Finish the term you were elected to and leave with class man

Cantor said: “It has been the highest honor of my professional life to serve the people of Virginia’s 7th District in Congress. That is why it is with tremendous gratitude and a heavy heart that I have decided to resign from Congress, effective Aug. 18.”
A special election will be held to fill Cantor’s position but we already know who will be taking over the @GOPLeader twitter account. Cantor handed the Twitter handle over to Kevin McCarthy.
With that, it’s time to pass on the @GOPLeader Twitter handle to my good friend Kevin McCarthy, our next Majority Leader!
