I feel like I’ve been saying it for months: Ellie from the just-released survival game The Last of Us looks exactly like actress Ellen Page. During a Reddit AMA Sunday, the 26-year-old Juno star finally sounded off on the likeness, admitting that she feels the same way.
If Ellen Page’s likeness was indeed used in The Last of Us, it was without the actress’ permission, she said.
“I guess I should be flattered that they ripped off my likeness, but I am actually acting in a video game called Beyond Two Souls, so it was not appreciated,” she admitted in response to a question about the game.
Ellen Page’s likeness being used without permission for the game has been a topic of discussion since the first images of The Last of Us arrived online. The controversy reached its zenith last June, when game studio Naughty Dog said that they had received criticism for the apparent rip, calling Ellie’s resemblance to Page a “complete coincidence.”
“We hear what people are saying,” said game director Bruce Straley. “We didn’t realise that ourselves, because we just try to push for the characters that we want. And when we see the reactions we’re like, OK, we don’t like that… We want our characters to stand on their own two feet.”
He also said that Ellie was made over again to more closely resemble actress Ashley Johnson, who plays the character.
“We went a little bit younger, and we think that we got a little bit more Ashley inside of there, which we like. And we really want to respect Ashley for the great performance that she’s giving us.”
Do you think that The Last of Us stole Ellen Page’s likeness for the Ellie character intentionally, or was it really a “complete coincidence?”
