With all the talk about Facebook acquiring Oculus VR for $2 billion, one fact was largely left out of the news. That acquisition will bring Doom and Quake creator John Carmack to the team at Facebook.
Carmack joined Oculus VR in late 2013, taking on the role of CTO. Facebook confirmed to TechCrunch that he will remain in his same role.
Carmack chose to leave id Software after they failed to share in his enthusiasm for virtual reality.
In a press call to reporters Mark Zuckerberg said Facebook is determined to build the next computing platform. With a visionary like John Carmack in his corner it’s becoming increasingly hard to harp on Zuckerberg’s billion dollar acquisitions for anything seen as cool and useful.
Even with Facebook backing virtual reality technology, it is likely years before the tech is seen as a viable consumer tech.
Do you think Mark Zuckerbergd and John Carmack have what it takes to build the future of computing platforms?
