Donald Glover To Play Miles Morales In ‘Ultimate Spider-Man: Web Crawlers’

Donald Glover will finally get his chance to play Spider-Man.

The former Community actor petitioned for the part of Peter Parker in 2010 when Sony rebooted the franchise. Glover’s desire to play Spider-Man sparked an online debate about race in comic-books. When comic book writer Brian Michael Bendis noticed the Twitter campaign, as well as Glover’s character Troy Barnes in Spider-Man pajamas on the show community, he decided to create a story line that would allow people of all races and ages to be Spider-Man.

Bendis said in 2011: “He looked fantastic! I saw him in the costume and thought, ‘I would like to read that book.’ So I was glad I was writing that book.”

Miles Morales was introduced in the 2011 comic book series Ultimate Spider-Man and now Donald Glover will get a chance to voice the character that he helped create.

According to USA Today, the new series will take Peter Parker on a journey through several parallel worlds where he’ll meet various incarnations of Spider-Man. Glover will play Miles Morales, a half-Hispanic, half-black version of Spider-Man.

Glover said: “I don’t think it’s hit me necessarily yet how big of a deal that is. I’m very grateful for that, and it’s cool to read the comic now … That’s the great part about the Spider-Man costume: He can be anybody. Spider-Man could be a girl. Spider-Man could be an old man. You don’t know. So I just tried to be as me as possible, because you’re always just going to bring it back to yourself when you watch the show.”

Here’s a clip of Donald Glover as Miles Morales (AKA Spider-Man).

The season premiere of Ultimate Spider-Man: Web Crawlers airs this Sunday. The “Spider-Verse” arc of episodes will air sometime next year.
