Seahawks fullback Derrick Coleman filmed an inspiring ad for Duracell that is going viral. Coleman is the first legally deaf offensive player in NFL history, but he doesn’t let his disability keep him from pursuing his dream.
The ad focuses on Coleman’s deafness and his struggles with football as a result. He wasn’t drafted in the NFL in 2012, but ended up being signed to the Seahawks’ practice squad in December 2012.
Coleman narrates the ad, which tells the story of being picked on when he was growing up, being told he would never make it in football, and being passed over by the NFL Draft. He recalls, “They didn’t call my name, told me it was over. But I’ve been deaf since I was 3, so I didn’t listen.”
The football player explained in an interview about the ad, “They came to me, and said they liked my story, and I said ‘OK,’ I want to join up. I just hope to inspire people, especially children, to trust the power within and achieve their dreams.” Considering the ad has been seen by more than 3 million people in five days, it’s safe to say Derrick Coleman is making a difference and inspiring others to pursue their dreams too.
