Netflix is getting into the movie business. The streaming service has already made a few hit TV shows (House Of Cards, Orange Is The New Black, etc…) and in 2015 the company will release it’s first movie, a sequel to Ang Lee’s Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.
According to the NY Times, Netflix will be working with the Weinstein company to produce a sequel to the hit 2000 movie. The film will be available for streaming on Netflix the same day that it hits Imax theaters.
The distribution plan is a unique one and it could hurt ticket sales. But Ted Sarandos, chief content officer at Netflix, isn’t worried about that.
Sarandos said: “What I am hoping is that it will be a proof point that the sky doesn’t fall … These are two different experiences, like going to a football game and watching a football game on TV.”
Netflix said that the Crouching Tiger sequel will be the first of many Netflix original movies. The company didn’t say what it was planning on next.
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon was a groundbreaking martial arts drama. The movie was nominated for 10 Academy Awards. It won for Best Foreign Language Film, Best Art Direction, Best Original Score and Best Cinematography.
