Scott van Zyl, a trophy hunter who kills endangered lions and elephants, vanished last week after he embarked on a hunting safari in Zimbabwe.

Accompanied by a Zimbabwean tracker and a pack of dogs, the professional hunter who coordinates trips for foreign clients is figured to have been eaten by crocodiles on the bank of the Limpopo River.

It is presumed Van Zyl and his tracker left their truck and walked in divergent directions into the bush. The dogs later arrived at the camp without Van Zyl, whose belongings were sighted inside the vehicle.

Rescue teams were dispatched to search for the hunter and trackers, helicopters and divers all scoured the region.

His tracks were later noticed leading to the banks of the river and his backpack was housed nearby. Sakkie Louwrens, a member of one of the search teams, stated police alleged two Nile crocodiles may have eaten Van Zyl.

“We found what could possibly be human remains in them,” Louwrens told local news. Forensic specialists are presently testing whether the remains belong to Van Zyl.

The SS Pro Safaris website, operated by Van Zyl, declares the company “has conducted numerous safaris” throughout Southern Africa. These consist “elephants in Botswana to the smallest blue duiker in KwaZulu Natal”.

It goes on to list rhino, buffalo, leopards, antelopes and lions as targets for hunts.
