Comedian Behind ‘Dumb Starbucks’ Swings By Jimmy Kimmel, Says It’s Perfectly Legal

Dumb Starbucks

Dumb Starbucks took social media by storm this week, causing many to wonder if it was actually real, and last night its owner stopped by Jimmy Kimmel Live.

Opened in Los Angeles by comedian Nathan Fielder, he says the store is perfectly legal because they’ve “fulfilled the minimum requirements to be considered a parody under U.S. law.”

Fielder has a show on Comedy Central called “Nathan for You” where he sort-of-but-not-really helps struggling business owners.

With a background in business, and a passion for coffee, he came up with the idea for Dumb Starbucks, which will likely be mentioned on his show.

Starbucks issued a statement earlier in the week, and isn’t taking a back seat:

“We are evaluating next steps and while we appreciate the humor, they cannot use our name, which is a protected trademark.”

The coffee giant isn’t the only concern. On Monday, Dumb Starbucks was shut down by the health department due to not having a health permit.

However, according to Fielder, it doesn’t need one because “technically, legally speaking, we’re an art gallery and the coffee we are selling is art.”

When asked why Dumb Starbucks gained so much attention so quickly, here’s what Fielder had to say:

“I think a lot of Americans lost hope that innovation in business was gone, and I think people saw, “Wow, there’s a whole new way of doing things now.” It kinda allowed people to dream again in a way.”

As for the future of Dumb Starbucks, the ever sarcastic Nathan Fielder says a store will be opening in Brooklyn, New York if they can get past the health issues at the current flagship.
