Blood Moon Photos Light Up Twitter

Did you see the blood moon last night? If you missed it, you might want to check out the #BloodMoon2014 hashtag. Twitter users have been sharing their blood moon photos all morning.

CNN reports that this was the second blood moon of the year. The next will occur on April 4, 2015 and then another will rise up about six months later on September 28, 2015.

A lunar eclipse occurs when the earth comes between the sun and the moon. The earth casts a shadow on the moon which then turns a blood red thanks to sunlight being scattered by the atmosphere.

NASA explains: “A lunar eclipse happens when the Earth casts a shadow that blocks sunlight that normally reflects off of the moon. A total lunar eclipse can only happen when the sun, Earth and moon are perfectly aligned. During the time of total eclipse, the moon will often look reddish due to red and orange light being scattered by the atmosphere. This eerie, harmless effect has earned the tongue-in-cheek nickname “blood moon.”
