Bill Cosby will not be appearing as scheduled on The Late Show With David Letterman on Wednesday night.
The reason for cancelling Cosby’s guest appearance was not announced but many are speculating that it has to do with the growing uproar over allegations that Cosby has sexually assaulted several women during his career.
Late Show representative Kimberly Izzo-Emmet said, “We can’t comment on the guest booking process.”
While the allegations are not new, the fury is. Comedian Hannibal Buress put the scandal back in the spotlight last month when he called Cosby “a rapist” during his set. The comedian has seen a bit of a fallout since then. Earlier this week when Cosby asked the internet to turn him into a meme, many people took the opportunity to accuse Cosby of bring a rapist.
ABC notes, however, that cancelling on Letterman may have been the comedian’s choice. Cosby recently requested to postpone his appearance on The Queen Latifah Show, presumably to let some of the outrage die down.
Bill Cosby has been accused by several women of sexual assault over the years but he has never been convicted of a crime. He did settle at least one lawsuit out of course.
Barbara Bowman, one of Cosby’s accusers, penned an op-ed for the Washington Post this week. Bowman writes: “Cosby won my trust as a 17-year-old aspiring actress in 1985, brainwashed me into viewing him as a father figure, and then assaulted me multiple times.”
