Automattic (The Company Behind WordPress) Acquires Longreads

Automattic (the company behind WordPress) has acquired startup Longreads.

Longreads is a platform for “discovering and reading long-form writing content on the web.”

The terms of the deal have not been disclosed.

Longreads has, since 2009 offered “a longer read.” The company gathers “long-form written content from across the Web and gathers it in a single place for you to read.”

Why, and how that’s related to Automattic/ WordPress is not immediately clear.

Longreads founder Mark Armstrong said in a post:

“We see a huge opportunity to go deeper with our mission, both through Longreads and WordPress.com — to find undiscovered talent, to celebrate the work of writers and publishers you already love, and bring even more of the best storytelling onto the Internet,”

Automattic has had some insanely high valuations recently and is potentially itself a takeover target.

Founder Matt Mullenweg though doesn’t seem to care as a recent picture (as above) shows that he’s owning some sort of hippy look.

It must be great to take someone elses’ code and turn it into a multi-billion dollar company.
