Amazon is thinking outside of the box when it comes to the future of shipping, and tonight on 60 Minutes, CEO Jeff Bezos revealed a delivery drone.
An octocopter, it’s capable of carrying up to five pounds for a 10 mile roundtrip, and delivering a package in 30 minutes or less.
Called Amazon Prime Air, Bezos says the next generation shipping service could be available to customers in four to five years, and enter testing as early as 2015 depending on FAA approval.
Shortly after the segment aired on 60 Minutes, @AmazonDrone was created to poke some fun at the idea.
With technology developed by the U.S. Government, Amazon PrimeAir is able to deliver your packages fast — before you even order them.

It came down to me, or firing your packages out of a giant t-shirt cannon. Your call, America.

There were also a couple tweets deleted shortly after posting:
Some Twitter users feel the delivery drone concept is a PR stunt so Amazon can make more money on Cyber Monday.
Earlier my social media feeds were expressing concern about how Amazon treats workers. Now it’s all drones all the time. PR mission achieved

Gold medal to @amazon PR team for dropping the drone story on #CyberMonday eve. Buzz will be at a fever pitch. Masterful

Amazon PR is smart. They know what gets us geeks hot and bothered right before Cyber Monday.
