A Real Hoverboard Finally Exists And You Can Fund It On Kickstarter

It’s about time. Back To The Future fans have been waiting patiently for a real life hoverboard and now, nearly three decades since we saw Michael J. Fox riding the coolest gadget that never existed, we have a chance to make hoverboards a reality.

Arx Pax recently unveiled a real Hoverboard called the Hendo Hoverboard and the company is trying to raise money on Kickstarter. So far they’re doing a pretty good job. Arx Pax has already raised more than $100,000 for the new hoverboard. The company hopes to raise at least $250,000.

But before you get too excited you should know that the Hendo has a few limitations. Mainly, it only works above a certain type of surface. Engadget reports that the Hendo uses an electromagnetic field which only works properly above non-ferrous metals like aluminum and copper.

That may make it a little less fun to ride but according to Arx Pax founder Greg Henderson the Hendo wasn’t developed to enable all of us to do our best Michael J. Fox impressions. Henderson said that Hendo will eventually be able to carry huge payloads which could open up a wide range of possibilities.

“About two years ago, we began investigating magnetic field architecture (MFA) and hover technology as a better way to build, move people and move materials. During our research, we discovered a way to transmit electromagnetic technology that is far more efficient than anything else. This means that our patent-pending Hendo Hover Engine technology can enable platforms to hover over non-ferrous materials with payloads of virtually any size and weight.

Here’s a video of the Hendo in action.

Henderson added: “It came from the idea of hovering a building out of harm’s way. If you can levitate a train that weighs 50,000 kilograms, why not a house?”
