It’s tempting to think that America is the center of social media activity (because ‘MERICA, we’re the center of everything) but at least 17 developing countries make our social networking obsession look more like a mild flirtation.
A new Pew Research Center report shows that Internet users in other countries use social media a heck of a lot more than we do in the states. “People are using social networking sites to stay in touch with family and friends and to share their views on an array of topics, including popular culture, religion and politics,” the authors of the report shared.
Most people in developing nations aren’t Internet users yet, so for the purposes of the study, Internet use was linked to a country’s income.
It’s a little tl;dr, but basically, while everybody and their mom has Internet access in America, the relative few who have it in developing nations all use social media (and daily), while there are still many Americans with Internet access who only use it to look at pictures of cats.
In the U.S., 73 percent of Internet users also use social networks. For the following 17 developing countries, that number jumps over 73 percent to as high as 88 percent:
- Egypt
- Russia
- Philippines
- Tunisia
- Indonesia
- Jordan
- Venezuela
- Nigeria
- Turkey
- Ghana
- Mexico
- Chile
- Malaysia
- Kenya
- Argentia
- El Salvador
- Senegal
Thus, those 17 countries love Facebook more than you do.
