11-year-old Nada al-Ahdal ran away from home after she was told about her arranged child marriage to an older man. Shortly after leaving her family she posted a YouTube video in which she protested child marriage.
In her video al-Ahdal says she would be “better off dead” than married at 11. The little girl says she would rather forgo her education, dreams for the future, and childhood, then marry an older man.
The video has received more than 5.4 million views since being posted on July 21.
The story has grown so big that the young girls story topped Reddit and was reported on by the HuffingtonPost, MSN, and various other publications.
In the clip Nada al-Ahdal says:
“I would have no life, no education. Don’t they have any compassion?”
The video is hard to watch as the little girl says “I would rather die.”
The viral hit highlights a major worldwide epidemic. According to the United Nations one out of nine girls will be married by the age of 15. The UN claims that 14.2 million girls will become child brides over the next 10 years.
