Yahoo has made a significant push the past two years to get users back using its products, and according to a new report, has serious plans for original video content.
According to the Wall Street Journal, the tech company is in the process of acquiring four original comedy series.
Each series would consist of 10 episodes per season, and cost anywhere between $700,000 to a few million dollars per episode.
This would put Yahoo in Netflix and HBO territory, and there’s a good possibility that users would see familiar faces with such a major budget in place.
The shows could potentially be available through Yahoo Screen, its online video portal, but the company would have to first address how to better deliver the original content.
Currently, Screen is only accessible via the web and an iOS app, making it difficult for people to tune in from the comfort of their couch.
With competitors like HBO and Netflix, not only can you watch on virtually any mobile device, including game consoles, but by way of apps available on streaming devices and smart TVs.
Recently, it was reported Yahoo was poaching major YouTube stars, hinting that the tech giant may be planning a new video portal or a major revamp of its existing one.
