2.5 billion people around the world still lack access to proper sanitation and many countries still lack sustainable sanitation for the future. In the typhoon-wrecked Philippines the issue of toilet sanitation has only worsened in recent weeks.
To raise awareness about the serious threats brought about by the lack of toilet sanitation, the World Health Organization (WHO) and various other organizations are celebrating World Toilet Day.
Marked on Twitter by the hashtag #WorldToiletDay various agencies are spreading awareness about toilet sanitation through pictures and video.
In response to that hashtag WHO has spent the day posting pictures of toilets from around the world. The agency offers pictures of modern day toilets all the way down to old school outhouses.
The bathroom isn’t the cleanest room in our home but at least most of us in industrialized countries have access to running water.
Here are some interesting facts about toilet conditions as provided by the United Nations:
- 2.5 billion people — one in three people in the world — do not have a toilet or access to sustainable sanitation
- Diarrheal diseases are the second most common cause of death in young children in developing countries
- They kill more than HIV/AIDS, malaria and measles combined
- In many countries girls stay home during menstruation days because of the absence of a safe place to change and clean themselves, and many drop out altogether.
Here are some of the the #WorldToiletDay photos that may surprise you. Notice the difference from one region of the world to the next:
