#WhitePeopleActivities was a popular trending topic on Twitter today, one of the site’s interesting ruminations on racial divides in both the US and in the microcosm of Twitter.
The #WhitePeopleActivities hashtag didn’t seem to be the invention of what is colloquially known as “Black Twitter,” and if it was, it was quickly co-opted by many white people cracking jokes about Starbucks, Instagram, inadvertent racism and other “stuff white people like.”
The breakdown of race on Twitter is interesting, and #WhitePeopleActivities seems to be one of those places where — far from uncomfortable racial comments behind anonymity — users white and black are getting together harmoniously to gently tease white people. (And of course, the #BlackPeopleActivities trending topic followed, but was not as popular.)
One top tweet on the #WhitePeopleActivities trending topic poked fun at cultural characterizations of white people, quipping:
