WhatsApp for Android has rolled out several new updates, including the ability to “sponsor” or pay for another friend’s service.
With the messaging app costing only 99 cents per year, even paying five years in advance, which nets you a 25 percent discount, will just set you back a good cup of joe.
Android Police got their hands on the full changelog, and here’s what you can expect:
- New privacy settings for last seen, profile photo and status
- Add Camera shortcut for quicker picture sending
- Add ability to pay for a friend’s WhatsApp service
- Add large video thumbnails in chat
- Add option to show unread messages on home screen widget (Android 3.0+)
- Add option to share/save profile photo/group icon
- Increase message history user can send
- Fix sending flag emoji on Sony phones
- Fix voice note recording volume on Samsung Note 3 and Sony phones
- Enabled Hindi (Android 4.1+)
With the new privacy settings, WhatsApp users can allow everyone or just friends to see their photo, status and when they were last around.
When paying for a friend’s service, they don’t have to be using the Android app, and works for any platform that the app supports.
The update is rolling out now to WhatsApp for Android, and there’s no word on when the “sponsor” friends feature will make its way to other platforms.
