WhatsApp Now Features 500 Million Active Users

WhatsApp Hits 500 Million Active Users

Remember when Mark Zuckerberg purchased WhatsApp for $19 billion and a bunch of people scratched their collective heads? The social messaging platform has just announced that it is now servicing 500 million active users.

In a blog post on the official WhatsApp website the company writes:

“Thanks to all of you, half a billion people around the world are now regular, active WhatsApp users. In the last few months, we’ve grown fastest in countries like Brazil, India, Mexico, and Russia, and our users are also sharing more than 700 million photos and 100 million videos every single day. We could go on, but for now, it’s more important that we get back to work – because here at WhatsApp, we’re just getting started.”

When Mark Zuckerberg purchased the platform he said WhatsApp was striving to “connect one billion people” and they are now halfway to that milestone.

WhatsApp founder Jan Koum says users are now sharing 700 million photos and 100 million videos every single day.

We reported on December 12, 2013 that WhatsApp surpassed the 400 million active user milestone. At current rates the company is attracting more than 25 million new active users per month.
