Washington Redskins Name Change? Twitter Has A Few Suggestions

The Washington Redskins may be getting a name change. The US Patent Office cancelled six trademarks owned by the Washington Redskins today.

The Trademark Trial and Appeal Board wrote in its decision: “We decide, based on the evidence properly before us, that these registrations must be canceled because they were disparaging to Native Americans at the respective times they were registered.”

That doesn’t mean that owner Dan Snyder will change the name but it definitely puts some pressure on the team. Without the trademarks, anybody will be able to use the team’s name to sell unofficial merchandise.

Will that be enough to make Snyder change the team’s name? We’ll have to wait and see. If Snyder does change the team’s name he might want to take a look at Twitter for suggestions.

USA Today reports that the Washington Redskins can still keep their name with or without trademarks. The team can also file an appeal.
