Virginia Republican Refers To Pregnant Women As ‘The Child’s Host’ On Facebook

They say Virginia is for Lovers, but there seems to be very little love coming from Virginia State Sen. Steve Martin towards pregnant women in his state.

On Valentine’s Day, women health advocates sent an e-card to Sen. Martin asking him to reverse his opinion on abortion and other women’s rights issues. He instead wrote a long and offensive post responding to it, in which he referred to pregnant women as “the child’s host[.]” He has since edited the post to referr to them as “The bearers of children” as if that is less offensive.

I’m not going to assume a right to kill [the fetus] just because the child’s host (some refer to them as mothers) doesn’t want it.

In explaining his post and edit, Sen. Martin said he was being “sarcastic” and that he was “playing [pro-choice advocates’] argument back to them. Obviously I consider pregnant women to be mothers.”

In the original letter he also explained how he thinks unwanted pregnancies should be dealt with, stating the old adage “don’t have unprotected sex” seeming to forget that “the Child’s host” isn’t the only one involved in the process.

As one would expect, the response on twitter has been a mix of mocking and rage.

While Sen. Martin may have indeed been trying to be sarcastic, he should know that is one of the hardest emotions to portray online, and it certainly isn’t appropriate to use in a debate about a subject as controversial as abortion. He also should know by now that editing a post will almost never lessen the heat.
