Is that a UFO on Mars? A photograph taken by the Navcam onboard NASA’s Curiosity Rover has got conspiracy theorists talking about alien life forms again.
The photograph shows the Curiosity Rover against the backdrop of the martian landscape. In the upper right hand corner of the photo there is a small dot of light. Some people believe that this a UFO on mars.
The interesting thing about this little white light is that appears to move from photo to photo. In one image the light is far away above some martian mountains. In the next photo, which was apparently taken about 30 seconds later, the light appears to be closer to the surface.
So what does NASA think about all of this? Justin Maki, a NASA engineer who helped build the Curiosity Rover’s NavCam, said that the “UFO on Mars” is simply a hot pixel. Maki said that the bright light is probably caused by sunlight or cosmic rays.
Maki said: “This is a hot pixel that has been around since we started using the Right Navcam, In the the thousands of images we’ve received from Curiosity, we see ones with bright spots nearly every week. These can be caused by cosmic-ray hits or sunlgiht glinting from rock surfaces, as the most likely explanations.”
