Sen. Creigh Deeds Leaves Hospital, Sends Thank You On Twitter

Creigh Deeds Leaves Hospital

Virginia state Sen. Creigh Deeds was released from the hospital on Friday, three days after his son reportedly stabbed him, then fatally shot himself. Deeds didn’t speak to reporters, but he did take to Twitter to send a thank your for the outpouring of support he received since the incident. Deeds wrote:

Deeds was hospitalized on Tuesday when he was repeatedly stabbed in the face and chest during an altercation with his son, Austin Deeds. The younger man was found inside the family home dying of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to authorities.

Austin Deeds underwent a psychiatric evaluation on Monday, the day before the altercation. A magistrate issued an emergency custody order, but Austin returned home later that evening. Officials initially explained that there were no psychiatric beds available, but three nearby hospitals came forward to say they had room, but were never contacted.

Eric Swenson, a spokesman for University of Virginia Health System, which treated Sen. Deeds, wrote in an email to The Washington Post, “Sen. Deeds was discharged from UVA Medical Center on Friday morning. I have no additional details I can provide.”
