Benjamin Curtis, who played guitar for Secret Machines and School of Seven Bells, died on Sunday at the age of 35. Curtis was battling lymphatic cancer, according to an announcement of his passing on Facebook.
School of Seven Bells announced the news, explaining that they “hoped to delay this announcement until a more suitable time when his friends and family could feel better prepared and settled to greet any correspondences from folks attempting to reach out.” However, the band explained that “the news has prematurely leaked.”
Curtis formed the band in 2007 with vocalist Alejandra Deheza. They released three studio albums, the last being 2012’s Ghostory. The guitarist was diagnosed with t-cell lymphoblastic lymphoma in February and artists like the Strokes’ Albert Hammond Jr. and Interpol’s Paul Banks helped raise funds to cover his treatments, according to USA Today.
The band thanked friends and fans for supporting them, including everyone who participated in the benefits they held around New York City to raise funds for the guitarist’s treatments. It also asked for privacy for friends, family, and bandmates as they mourn him. The full statement from School of Seven Bells is as follows:
