Good Morning America anchor Robin Roberts thanked her longtime girlfriend in a Facebook post on Sunday. It was the first time Roberts acknowledged her sexuality, though friends and coworkers have known for years.
In the post Roberts reflected on her bone marrow transplant, as Sunday was the one-year anniversary of her 100th day of recovery. She wrote, “Hard to believe this was 1 year ago today..when I reached a critical milestone of 100 days post transplant…and KJ was finally allowed to come back home.” She included a photo of herself and her dog in the post.
The GMA anchor added, “I am grateful for my entire family, my long time girlfriend, Amber, and friends as we prepare to celebrate a glorious new year together.” Roberts didn’t give her girlfriend’s last name, but PEOPLE magazine identified her as Amber Laign, a licensed massage therapist in San Francisco. The couple apparently met through mutual friends a decade ago.
Robin Roberts has kept few secrets about her health and has written and spoke extensively about her battle with breast cancer in 2008. She also spoke freely about her bone marrow transplant in 2012 to treat a rare blood disorder called myelodysplastic syndrome.
While Roberts acknowledged her long-term relationship with Amber, she focused the post on her recovery and wished her fans the best in the new year.
