In 2011 video streaming service Qik was acquired by Skype for $150 million. Less than three years later and the company has announced plans to shut down.
Qik will officially close on April 30, 2014, giving the platforms users enough time to save their videos for use on other services.
On the Qik website the following message has been posted: “We are retiring Qik as the Qik video messaging technology has now been incorporated into Skype. Users can now enjoy a great experience on Skype with features such as audio and video calling, instant messaging and video messaging with contacts in their Skype and Microsoft networks.”
The program will continue to operate until April 30 but will be removed from all App Stores where it is currently available.
Qik suggests that users download their videos to their computers or save them to a cloud storage service such as Microsoft’s OneDrive (Skype is owned by Microsoft).
Paying customers will receive a prorated refund based on the amount of time remaining on their account following the shutdown.
