Twitter acquired blogging platform Posterous in March 2012 and now the platforms Posterous Spaces offering has stopped accepting new registrations.
While there is still an option to click a “sign up” link on the Posterous front page several tipsters say the sites user registration option has been offline for at least one week.
When Twitter purchased Posterous for an undisclosed sum the company did not reveal its intentions for the platform. Twitter could have been planning a Tumblr killer or the move could have been a simple talent acquisition.
Back in December Posterous began giving users the option to back up their data which could point to a shut down. Twitter however did say at the time of the acquisition that it wasn’t to implement a data backup plan.
Because Twitter has not officially announced the shutdown of Posterous there is still the possibility that an extended technical glitch is leading to user account registration issues. In fact several months ago Posterous was taken offline to fix a lost database issue and then again by a DDOS attack and image uploading issues.
Posterous founder and CEO Sachin Agarwal is now a product manager at Twitter and with the social network attempting to engage its more than 200 million monthly users perhaps the time to shut down Posterous has arrived.
