Mugger Apologizes On Facebook For Crime He Committed 35 Years Ago

Facebook Apology For Mugging

A one-time mugger apologized on Facebook for a crime 35 years after the incident happened. Michael Goodman, 53, was a teenager when he held up Claude Soffel, 52, for the man’s bus pass in the 1970s. Soffel’s name, and the incident, haunted him for the next 35 years.

It wasn’t until recently when he spotted Soffel’s name on Facebook that he knew he could ask for forgiveness for his crime. The victim’s name appeared in a Facebook post about the now-shuttered shop H&H Bagels, reports The New York Post. So, Goodman posted on November 19, “You may not remember this … but a long time ago I walked up the steps of The Museum of Natural History one afternon, trying to look like a tough guy … (mugged) you for your bus pass.”

He added, “Anyway, I have never forgotten the incident or your name.” The one-time mugger explained his shock at seeing Soffel’s name again, then wrote, “I”M VERY SORRY that you had to go through that crap that day long ago, I wish it had never happened but it did … I’m truly sorry for taking your bus pass back then – forgive me thanks for reading this “strange” very long message!”

It didn’t even take a day for Claude Soffel to respond. He wrote back, “wow. Memory is a funny thing, I recognize your name now, as well. So, apology accepted.” Soffel went on to explain that he now works with men, helping them be who they want to be. He closed by saying, “So, let us now, jointly, put this in its proper place, behind us.”
