McDonald’s New New Happy Meal Mascot Is Terrifying

McDonald’s may want to think about renaming its Happy Meals mascot to something other than “Happy.” How about “Terrifying.” Or “Nightmare Inducing.” Or “Marketing Failure.”

The fast food giant unveiled Happy to its American customers last night on Twitter. McDonald’s was hoping that the goofy, bug-eyed creature would make people, you know, happy, but that wasn’t the reaction the restaurant got on social media.

According to Market Watch, McDonald’s Happy Meals mascot has been bringing nightmares to children in Europe since 2009. It’s officially coming to the United States this summer along with a new low-fat yogurt snack.

McDonald’s writes: “McDonald’s today introduced “Happy,” a new animated Happy Meal character that brings fun and excitement to kids’ meals while also serving as an ambassador for balanced and wholesome eating. Happy will be introduced nationwide May 23, and will encourage kids to enjoy fruits, vegetables, low-fat dairy and wholesome beverages such as water or juice.”

This isn’t the first mascot to get destroyed on social media. Do you guys remember Pierre The Pelican? Or King Cake Baby?

Maybe Happy the Happy Meal Mascot isn’t as terrifying as we thought.
