Pepsi MAX teamed up with NASCAR driver Jeff Gordon last year, and filmed the racing legend taking an unsuspecting car salesman on the ride of his life.
The video received nearly 41 million views, and you’ll definitely want to give it a watch before skipping ahead:
While it was a clear viral success for Pepsi, the video also had its critics with Jalopnik writer Travis Okulski one of the loudest.
Here’s what Okulski had to say:
“After watching the video a number of times, a few little things started to jump out at me that just didn’t sit right. I spoke to someone who was on site during the filming of the video, and they confirmed that nearly everything you saw on screen was fake.”
He went on to breakdown what was wrong with the legitimacy of the video, and the post went on to receive over 200,000 views.
Today, Jeff Gordon and Pepsi MAX got their revenge. In the video, Gordon is an ex-convict turned taxi driver who picks up Okulski from his hotel.
Just a couple minutes in, Gordon gets pulled over by the 5-0, and that’s when things get a bit hairy.
Okulski’s reaction seems real, and he even wrote about the experience:
“So, just as I was able to say with total certainty that the first Pepsi Test Drive ad was totally fake, I can say with total certainty that this second Pepsi Test Drive ad is unequivocally, one hundred percent, totally, absolutely real.”
The prank is sure to be another viral hit for Pepsi MAX, and will make people think twice before hopping in another yellow cab.
