Instagram’s First Ad Features Designer Michael Kors

Instagram’s first ad arrived on Friday.

Instagram said last week that it would start rolling out ads and, well, the day has finally come. The social photography service’s first real ad, featuring designer Michael Kors and a gold watch, hit the web this weekend.

Instagram is attempting to have its ads blend naturally into the feeds of its users. Basically, the social network wants to choose photos that it’s users actually want to see. Of course, users can tell which photos are ads and which are not due to the big “Sponsored” sign at the top right of the photo.

The Michael Kors ad received thousands of likes after it was placed into user’s feeds but it also received a few angry comments.

Instagram’s first ad hasn’t popped up in everyone’s feed yet. (It hasn’t showed up in mine.) The social network said that it wants to show ads that its users are interested in so maybe I’m just not interested in Michael Kors.

Instagram writes: “We want ads to be creative and engaging, so we’re starting with just a handful of brands that are already great members of the Instagram community. If you see an ad that doesn’t interest you, you can tap the “…” below it to hide it and provide feedback about what you didn’t like. This will help us show you more interesting ads in the future.

The Michael Kors ad is Instagram’s one and only at the moment but the social network will soon start rolling out other sponsored posts. Right now, Instagram has Burberry, Lexus, Macy’s and several other high-end brands listed as ad partners.
