GetGlue Acquired For $25 Million, Including Stock

GetGlue, a favorite app among moviegoers and TV watchers, has just been acquired by its competitor, Viggle. The acquisition was valued at $25 million plus stock. As far as all the stock that was part of the deal, 48.3 million shares are now in the hands of Viggle, making the total acquisition valued at around $60 to $70 million.

Some concerns about the deal were whether GetGlue would be torn apart and branded as something different, but that doesn’t look to be the case. It’ll retain it’s brand image and name. In case you haven’t heard of Viggle before, it’s an app that rewards you for watching shows.

Similar to its competitor that it just acquired, instead of getting stickers and being able to redeem them, you get points that can be put towards actual products. For example, you can get a $25 Best Buy gift card, iPod Touch, $5 Barnes Noble gift card, and more.

It’s relatively unknown with around 1.2 million users. Acquiring GetGlue is a great fit, as it boasts 3.2 million registered users. All employees will simply be working for Viggle now and for users, everything will remain the same.

Studios and executives have long been trying to figure out a way to keep people watching shows on TV. Social media and the Internet have rapidly changed things, but apps like GetGlue give you an incentive to watch a show when it airs.

Working with Viggle, now those rewards can extend far beyond stickers and into actual products that people will want to get their hands on.
